When Queen Elizabeth II came to Oxford University

When I was a Junior Research Fellow at the Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford, Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) came for a reception to dedicate the garden behind the RAI building. It was named Princess Margaret Memorial Garden in honor of the Queen’s sister. No cameras or mobile phones were allowed at the event. This photograph was taken beforehand. As an RAI Fellow, I was invited to attend the event at which the Queen was present. The website describes it as follows: “The Princess Margaret Memorial Garden was opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 5 May 2006. Created by the acclaimed garden designer Anoushka Hempel, it features ponds and displays of lavender in a tranquil setting between the Rothermere American Institute and Mansfield College.” Each year on Princess Margaret's birthday, August 21, the garden is open to the public. My son Elliot also saw the Queen at a separate event on May 5, 2006. All the students at Christ Church Cathedral School, where my son was a student, came across the street to greet the Queen at Christ Church.
